Paul first preached the gospel on the continent of Europe at Philippi in Macedonia (northern Greece). As Alexander the Great had once conquered the East for his personal glory, the Apostle Paul now set out to conquer the West for the Kingdom of God. Writing later to the Philippians from his prison cell in Rome, Paul encouraged them to trust God - that even his imprisonment was helping to spread the gospel. Paul reminded them of Christ's suffering and humility - and how one day "...at the name of Jesus, everyone will bow down, those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth" (Phil. 2.10). In light of these things, they were to be glad in the Lord at all times, and he would give them a peace that passes understanding.
